Pedro Agosto hit a grand slam, but the Coppin State baseball team lost its Northeast Conference series opener to LIU, 16-7, on Friday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium in Hanover, Md. The Eagles’ record dropped to 7-25 overall and 7-12 in conference play, while the Sharks improved to 14-16 and 13-6 in league games.

The game saw limited offense from Coppin State aside from Agosto’s third home run of the season. The Eagles managed only five hits. Jordan Treadwell and Armando (AJ) Hurtado also contributed by driving in runs and drawing three walks between them.

Starting pitcher Luke Corcoran allowed four runs on seven hits over four innings but did not factor into the decision. Jake Cumming took the loss after giving up four runs in relief. Nick Dolbin allowed one run during his inning on the mound before Jackson Montgomery was charged with four more runs over his inning of work. Brandon Stephens pitched the final three innings for Coppin State, striking out four batters while allowing three runs—only one of which was earned.

Agosto put Coppin ahead early with his grand slam over the left field fence in the first inning after Treadwell singled and advanced on two balks by LIU’s starting pitcher. Hurtado was hit by a pitch and Angel Garcia walked before Agosto sent an 0-2 pitch deep for four early runs.

Corcoran gave up a single run in the second inning but threw a scoreless third before LIU tied it with three runs in the fourth. Cumming and Dolbin combined to allow five more Shark runs in the fifth inning, though Coppin responded with three scores of their own—Treadwell walked with bases loaded, Hurtado added an RBI single, and Noah Hogan scored during a double play groundout.

LIU continued scoring throughout late innings while CSU stranded runners across multiple frames. The teams are scheduled to meet again Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by Sunday’s series finale at noon.
