Anne Arundel County – MD issued the following announcement on Mar. 3.

Comment Period Will Run Until April 1, 2022

Anne Arundel County is conducting a study to explore potential improvements for traffic operations, safety, and accessibility for all travel modes along Conway Road from MD Route 3 to its western terminus. The study is underway with collaboration among the County’s partners at the Maryland Department of Transportation and biking and walking advocates.

The current roadway has potential for improvement for the purpose of better managing existing and future vehicular traffic demand, addressing geometric design deficiencies, managing vehicular travel speeds, and improving accessibility for pedestrians and bicyclists. Many motorists have raised concerns to the County about potential increases in vehicular traffic due to planned future development, and the County wishes to use this opportunity to improve transportation conditions in the area in conjunction with the anticipated completion of West County Elementary School. The crossing of the WB&A Trail along Conway and Patuxent Roads encourages a higher quality network of facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists, including dedicated separated facilities such as shared-use paths and sidewalks.

With anticipated growth in this area, providing a safer and more reliable roadway system and better options for those who wish to travel by non-motorized modes will improve regional connectivity and improve quality of life. Proposed improvements would assist those who wish to reach nearby destinations, such as Fort Meade, the Odenton MARC Station, Waugh Chapel Town Center, MD Route 3, schools, employment centers, healthcare, and tourism destinations.

This study also incorporates an assessment of potential new connections from Conway Road to MD Route 3 and other major roadways to the south, as communities within Anne Arundel County south of Conway Road and west of MD Route 3 are bound by the Patuxent River and the AMTRAK/MARC railroad tracks. The County wishes to explore opportunities to give residents and travelers alternate access points to the regional road network in the event of emergencies and road closures.
