After advocacy from Common Cause Maryland and other groups, the Baltimore County Council has approved a charter amendment to change how the county’s Inspector General is appointed.

“Baltimore County residents deserve a truly independent Inspector General. This measure helps ensure politicians can’t pick the very watchdog meant to hold them accountable,” said Joanne Antoine, executive director of Common Cause Maryland. “It’s a step towards building a government that works for the people, not politicians. Residents have made it clear they support the Office of the Inspector General and look forward to approving this change on the ballot in November 2026.”

The reform, led by Common Cause Maryland, would establish an independent advisory board responsible for recommending future appointments to the Inspector General position.
