Gary Hall, a 34-year-old Baltimore resident, has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison and three years of supervised release for possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon, as well as for having a firearm in a school zone. The sentencing was handed down by Chief Judge George L. Russell, III.

The announcement was made by Kelly O. Hayes, U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, alongside Special Agent in Charge Charles Doerrer of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley.

According to authorities, on March 5, 2024, Baltimore Police responded to reports of an armed individual at a convenience store. The person was later identified as Gary Hall. Officers found Hall walking toward Pimlico Elementary School during student dismissal time. An officer observed the handle of a firearm inside Hall’s inner jacket pocket.

When police attempted to stop him, Hall resisted and engaged in a physical struggle with the officer. During this altercation, officers recovered a loaded firearm from Hall’s jacket pocket equipped with an extended magazine containing 19 rounds of 9mm ammunition. Hall managed to evade capture at that time.

The following day, officers responded to a burglary report at a nearby residence where they found and arrested Hall in the basement.

This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which coordinates efforts among law enforcement agencies and communities to reduce violent crime and gun violence. The Department of Justice strengthened PSN’s strategy on May 26, 2021 by focusing on building community trust, supporting violence prevention organizations, prioritizing strategic enforcement actions, and tracking results (https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/department-justice-launches-violent-crime-reduction-strategy-strengthen-project-safe).

U.S. Attorney Hayes recognized the contributions of ATF and Baltimore Police Department investigators. “U.S. Attorney Hayes commended the ATF and BPD for their work in the investigation. Ms. Hayes also thanked Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jonathan Tsuei and James Hammond who are prosecuting the case.”
