The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) will host three public programs in connection with the exhibition “Amy Sherald: American Sublime.” The exhibition, organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), is curated by Sarah Roberts, SFMOMA’s former Andrew W. Mellon Curator and Head of Painting and Sculpture. The BMA’s presentation is coordinated by Asma Naeem, Dorothy Wagner Wallis Director, along with Cecilia Wichmann, Curator and Department Head of Contemporary Art; Antoinette Roberts, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art; and Dylan Kaleikaumaka Hill, Meyerhoff-Becker Curatorial Fellow.
The three programs planned are titled “Amy Sherald: American Sublime Community Day,” “A Baltimore Homecoming: Amy Sherald & Asma Naeem in Conversation,” and “Art After Hours: Step into the Sublime.”
Founded in 1914, the BMA offers exhibitions, programs, and collections that aim to tell a broad story of art while challenging established narratives and welcoming new perspectives. Its collection includes more than 97,000 objects from various eras and cultures. Notable highlights are the world’s largest public collection of works by Henri Matisse and significant holdings in prints, drawings, photographs, as well as an expanding number of works by contemporary artists from diverse backgrounds. The museum occupies a neoclassical building designed by John Russell Pope and features two gardens with modern and contemporary sculptures. It is located near Johns Hopkins University and has a community branch at Lexington Market. General admission to the museum is free.
