BCR Cyber announced on Apr. 30 the launch of its next Cybersecurity Operational Methods and Education Training (COMET) cohort, which will run from May 18 through June 23. The program is funded by the Maryland Department of Labor’s Employment Advancement Right Now (EARN) initiative and offers free cybersecurity training to state and local government employees in Maryland.

The announcement comes as counties continue to face a growing number of cybersecurity threats, with local government systems being targeted more frequently. Workforce development is considered an important part of improving cybersecurity defenses for critical infrastructure and public data.

The COMET program aims to provide practical experience through hands-on instruction and simulations that replicate real-world cyber threats. Participants will learn about security operations fundamentals, cyber range simulations, artificial intelligence applications in cybersecurity, and governance, risk, and compliance principles.

There are two tracks available within the program: Incumbent Training—a five-week course focusing on core knowledge such as IT fundamentals, security operations, and introductory AI concepts for those with at least one year of relevant experience—and Advanced Incumbent Training—a more intensive five-week track focused on Governance, Risk, and Compliance along with a cyber range practicum. Completion of the advanced track includes certification for GRC-related roles within government.

Both tracks are delivered via live remote instruction during weekday business hours to accommodate working professionals who have supervisor approval. Because the program is fully funded by EARN, there are no costs for participants or their employers.

Maryland state and local government employees interested in joining must apply by May 6 at https://bcrcyber.com/comet/cohort.
