The City of Bowie announced on April 6 that its annual spring hydrant flushing will take place from April 7 through May 20.

Hydrant flushing is an important maintenance activity for the city’s water system. It helps remove rust and sediment buildup in water lines, which can lead to temporary discoloration of tap water during the process.

According to the Utilities Division, residents may notice some discoloration in their water while hydrant flushing or other work on water mains is being performed. The city said it will make every effort to notify residents in advance about any work that could cause discoloration or service disruptions, except in cases of emergencies such as a water main break.

The city emphasized that discolored water remains safe for drinking and bathing. “The discoloration is a result of rust and sediment build up in the water lines and is not harmful. The discoloration should clear in approximately 24 hours,” officials said.

Residents are advised not to wash clothes when hydrant or main work is underway, as laundry may become stained by discolored water. If clothing does become stained, residents should keep items wet and rewash them using a rust remover. Rust remover can be obtained at no cost from City Hall and Public Works offices.
