The City of Bowie announced on April 1 that its spring hydrant flushing program will begin on April 7. During this period, residents may notice some discoloration in their water as work is carried out on water mains and fire hydrants.
Hydrant flushing is a routine maintenance activity intended to clear rust and sediment from the city’s water lines. The city said that while the water may appear discolored during these operations, it remains safe for drinking and bathing. The discoloration typically resolves within approximately 24 hours.
The Utilities Division stated that it will make every effort to notify residents about any scheduled work that could cause water discoloration or service disruptions, except in cases of emergencies such as a water main break.
Residents are advised to avoid washing clothes when hydrant or main work is taking place. If clothing does become stained due to discolored water, the city recommends keeping the items wet and re-washing them with a rust remover. Rust remover can be obtained free of charge at City Hall and Public Works offices.
A neighborhood schedule for the hydrant flushing program is available for residents who wish to learn more about when their area will be affected.
