The Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks defeated the Long Island University Sharks 15-11 on Mar. 29 at Hawk Stadium, led by a standout performance from freshman Clausell, who hit two home runs including a grand slam. The victory came in the final game of the series, though LIU won the series overall, two games to one.
This result is significant as it marks a strong showing for the Hawks against the conference-leading Sharks and highlights emerging talent within their roster.
LIU started with a three-run first inning before Darius Brown hit a two-run homer for UMES in the second. The Hawks rallied to score seven runs in that inning, taking an early lead. After several innings trading runs, UMES broke open the game in the sixth when Clausell hit his grand slam over left center field, pushing their advantage to five runs. He followed up with another home run—a two-run shot—in the eighth inning.
The Sharks continued to fight back with multiple scoring innings but could not overcome UMES’s offensive surge. Clausell closed out both his personal achievement and his team’s win by pitching in relief during the ninth inning and recording all three outs, including a diving catch by Brown for the final out.
UMES finished with 15 runs on 17 hits and only one error; LIU had 11 runs on 13 hits and also committed one error. Eight different Hawks players recorded multi-hit games—a season high for UMES—while Clausell became this season’s first Hawk player to homer twice in one game and set career highs with three hits and six RBI.
The team will wrap up its five-game homestand against Mount St. Mary’s at Hawk Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
