The City of College Park, Maryland, proclaimed on May 8 that May 2026 will be recognized as National Foster Care Month. The proclamation aims to honor and support children and youth in foster care, along with the families and professionals who care for them.
This initiative highlights the importance of ensuring every child grows up in a safe, stable, and nurturing environment. The proclamation notes that many young people in foster care face significant challenges when transitioning to adulthood due to limited access to necessary services and support.
The City’s statement recognizes the essential roles played by foster parents, caregivers, social workers, and community members. It says these individuals provide stability, guidance, and hope for children in need of care. “Every child deserves to grow up in a safe, stable, and nurturing environment filled with love, support, and opportunity,” the proclamation reads.
It also emphasizes building strong communities through collective efforts aimed at supporting families and preventing child abuse or neglect. According to the proclamation: “Strong communities are built through a shared commitment to supporting families, preventing child abuse and neglect, and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive.”
Mayor Fazlul Kabir signed the proclamation on behalf of College Park’s Mayor and Council on May 5. The city encourages all residents to take part in supporting children involved with foster care systems so that every child can have a safe and permanent home.
