The City of College Park announced on April 28 that it has been chosen to participate in the 2026 LEED for Cities National Certification Cohort, a program run by the U.S. Green Building Council. College Park is one of only 17 local governments nationwide selected for this year’s group.
The selection highlights efforts by College Park to focus on sustainability and data-driven decision-making in city management. The LEED for Cities program offers an internationally recognized framework that helps cities manage and improve their sustainability initiatives using social, economic, and environmental indicators.
Kenny Young, City Manager, said, “We are thrilled at the selection and opportunity for the City to participate in this illustrious program; sustainability is a key part of the City’s Strategic Plan and achieving it is a priority for College Park.”
By joining the cohort, College Park will receive training from sustainability experts, access tools to track performance, collect data on issues such as waste management and transportation, collaborate with other cities across the country, and work toward official LEED certification. This participation aims to help measure progress more effectively and identify new opportunities to improve local efforts according to national standards.
College Park’s selection also reflects its status as a silver-level Sustainable Maryland community and recognition as both a Tree City USA and Bee City USA. The city also holds designation as a Bicycle Friendly community. These achievements show ongoing work with partners toward making College Park one of the nation’s top college towns.
City officials encourage news outlets with questions or story ideas about these developments to contact Communications Manager Ryna Quinones.
