Coppin State University’s baseball team lost to Long Island University, 13-1, in the Northeast Conference series finale on Sunday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles now hold a record of 7-27 overall and 7-14 in conference play, while the Sharks improved to 16-16 for the season and 15-6 within the league.

The game saw Emilio Feliciano lead Coppin State offensively by going three-for-three at the plate and driving in their only run. Nelson Grajales and Noah Hogan each contributed one hit for the Eagles. Starting pitcher Nicco Halland allowed five earned runs over four and one-third innings before being relieved by Mekenna Wakakuwa and Keith Wallace. Abel Ortiz finished out the game, striking out four of six batters faced.

LIU took an early lead with three runs scored in the first inning. Halland managed to keep them scoreless in the second after inducing a double play but surrendered additional runs as LIU added two more in the third inning, followed by single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. The Sharks then broke open the game with six runs during a big sixth inning.

Coppin State’s lone run came during their half of the sixth when Grajales doubled, followed immediately by another double from Feliciano that brought him home. In relief, Ortiz struck out two batters during his appearance in the seventh inning before Coppin State was retired quickly to end their final offensive chance.

Looking ahead, Coppin State is scheduled to travel for a three-game series against Stonehill from April 24 through April 26.
