Coppin State University’s baseball team lost to Stonehill College, 13-3, on Apr. 25 at Lou Gorman Field in Easton, Massachusetts. Angel Garcia led Coppin State with two hits and two runs batted in for the second consecutive game, but the Eagles could not overcome defensive errors and a strong showing from the Skyhawks.
The loss brings Coppin State’s record to 7-29 overall and 7-16 in Northeast Conference play. Stonehill improved to 17-20 on the season and holds a conference record of 14-6.
Garcia, a freshman from Miami, Florida, went two-for-three at the plate with a double and drove in both Emilio Feliciano and Armando (AJ) Hurtado during the third inning. Bryce Thompson also contributed an RBI single for Coppin State. However, fielding proved costly as four errors by the Eagles’ defense—including two by outfielders—led to six unearned runs for Stonehill.
Starting pitcher Dillon Kirksey was charged with four earned runs over five-and-a-third innings while allowing only three hits before being relieved by Justin Ritz and Mekenna Wakakuwa. The Skyhawks scored four runs in their first turn at bat but saw their lead shrink when Coppin answered back with three runs across the second and third innings. Despite this rally, Stonehill capitalized on mistakes in the sixth inning to extend its advantage with six more runs.
The teams are scheduled to conclude their series on Sunday, April 26 at noon.
