Coppin State University’s baseball team lost a close Northeast Conference game to Wagner, 10-9, on May 9. The Eagles’ overall record dropped to 9-35 and their conference record to 9-20, while the Seahawks improved to 26-20 overall and 21-8 in league play.
The matchup was marked by frequent lead changes. Angel Garcia and Marcus Sanders each drove in two runs for Coppin State, with Sanders hitting a two-run home run. Garcia and Terrell Milliner both hit doubles. Despite having only four hits as a team, Coppin State capitalized on six walks and four errors by Wagner.
Nicco Holland started for the Eagles but did not receive a decision after allowing three earned runs over 4.2 innings with three strikeouts. Jake Cumming gave up six earned runs over the next three innings, while Mekenna Wakakuwa took the loss after surrendering the winning run in the ninth inning.
Wagner took an early lead with one run in the first inning and added two more in the third before Sanders’ home run narrowed the gap for Coppin State. The Eagles gained their first lead in the sixth inning thanks to Garcia’s two-run double that brought home Jordan Treadwell and Armando (AJ) Hurtado; Nelson Grajales scored later that inning on a wild pitch for a brief three-run advantage.
Both teams continued trading leads into late innings. In the eighth, wild pitches allowed Pedro Agosto and Grajales to score for Coppin State, giving them an 8-7 edge before Wagner responded with two runs of their own. In the ninth inning, Emilio Feliciano walked and eventually scored on an error to tie it at nine apiece before Wagner won with a walk-off single following a one-out walk and stolen base.
The series between Coppin State and Wagner will conclude at Vincent J. & Lenda Naimoli Ballpark at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
