Coppin State’s baseball team won 6-3 against New Haven on May 2 at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles led the entire game, improving their record to 9-31 overall and 9-17 in the Northeast Conference, while the Chargers dropped to 9-29 overall and 8-15 in league play.
The win was important for Coppin State as it helped strengthen their position within the conference. Jordan Treadwell led the Eagles offensively with three hits, two runs scored, an RBI, and a walk. Angel Garcia contributed three runs batted in with a double and a sacrifice fly. Armando (AJ) Hurtado walked twice and scored once, while Marcus Sanders also crossed home plate two times.
Nicco Holland secured his fourth win of the season for Coppin State by allowing only two earned runs on four hits over six innings with five strikeouts. Justin Ritz earned his fourth save after pitching three innings and giving up just one hit.
Garcia put Coppin ahead early with a sacrifice fly in the first inning before Terrell Milliner singled to score Hurtado for a two-run lead. Garcia drove in another run on a fielder’s choice in the second inning. In the fourth, Pranav Sundar reached base on an error that allowed Emilio Feliciano to score from second base.
New Haven responded with two runs in their half of the fourth inning but could not close the gap further as Holland kept them off balance through six innings. Treadwell extended Coppin’s lead by driving in Sanders during the fifth inning. Although New Haven added another run via sacrifice fly in the seventh, Garcia doubled down the left field line to drive home Treadwell for insurance late in the game.
Ritz finished out relief duties by inducing a double play after surrendering one single in ninth inning play.
The series between Coppin State and New Haven is scheduled to conclude at noon on Sunday, May 3 at Joe Cannon Stadium.
