Coppin State University’s softball team lost a close game to Delaware State, 3-2, in extra innings during the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament on May 9 at TowneBank Field. The Eagles ended their season with a record of 9-27, while the Hornets improved to 28-17.
The matchup remained scoreless through five innings before Delaware State scored first with a solo home run in the sixth inning. Coppin State’s leading hitter for the season, Giselle Ulloa, responded with a home run of her own to start the seventh inning.
Emily Quintero pitched a complete game for Coppin State and managed to escape a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the seventh by forcing a popup to second base. Both teams were unable to score in the eighth inning despite starting each frame with a runner on second base due to international tiebreaker rules.
In the ninth inning, Coppin took its first lead when Camaren Corbett scored from third after reaching on an error and advancing on a wild pitch. Delaware State tied it up after their placed runner advanced and scored on another wild pitch. A throwing error and fielder’s choice loaded the bases for Delaware State before another wild pitch brought home the winning run.
Ulloa collected two of Coppin’s four hits, both going for extra bases. Quintero threw eight innings and allowed only one earned run while striking out three batters.
The loss ends Coppin State’s season as they exit tournament play.
