Coppin State University’s softball team lost to Howard University, 7-3, in their series finale on April 19 at Nationals Youth Academy. The Eagles started strong with an early lead but could not hold off the league-leading Bison. Coppin State’s record now stands at 8-22 overall and 7-11 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
The game began with Emily Quintero scoring on a wild pitch after reaching base with a single, putting Coppin State ahead in the first inning. However, Howard responded by tying the score in the second inning and then gradually building their advantage over subsequent innings.
Giselle Ulloa contributed both a hit and an RBI for Coppin State, also drawing two walks during the game. Yasmin Burrell added another hit and an RBI, while Quintero scored twice and went one-for-two at bat with a walk. In pitching duties, Brooklyn Lee-Scott allowed five runs on four hits across just under four innings before Quintero finished out the game by allowing two runs and striking out three batters over more than two innings.
Ulloa drove in Quintero from first base with a double to left field during the fifth inning to narrow Howard’s lead to three runs. The Bison answered back immediately by adding two more runs of their own that same inning. Although Burrell brought home Kylee Sandino with an RBI single in the seventh inning for Coppin State, a double play ended any hopes of further comeback.
Coppin State will close its regular season against Morgan State University from April 25 through April 26. The series includes a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m., followed by a single game on Sunday scheduled for noon.
