The Charles County Sheriff’s Office announced on March 23 that detectives have charged Dayton James Webber, 27, of La Plata, with murder following a fatal shooting incident that occurred late the previous evening. According to the sheriff’s office, officers from the La Plata Police Department were flagged down at about 10:25 p.m. on March 22 by two witnesses near La Plata Road and Radio Station Road.

Authorities said a preliminary investigation found that an argument inside a car led to Webber allegedly shooting and killing front seat passenger Bradrick Michael Wells, 27, of Waldorf. The incident took place while two other individuals were present in the back seat. After the shooting, Webber reportedly pulled over near Radio Station Road and Llano Drive and asked his passengers to help remove Wells from the vehicle; when they refused and left on foot, Webber fled with Wells still inside.

Charles County Sheriff’s patrol officers joined efforts to locate Webber after being alerted by witnesses. Nearly two hours later, police received a call from a resident in Charlotte Hall reporting a body found in their yard. Officers responded and confirmed Wells was deceased at the scene.

Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Webber after locating his car in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was found at a nearby hospital seeking medical treatment before being arrested by Albemarle County Police as a fugitive from justice. Authorities say he is awaiting extradition to Charles County where he will face charges including first-degree murder and second-degree murder.
