Five University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) athletes took first place in their respective events during the team’s first outdoor meet of the season, held at the Salisbury University Lloyd Sigler Invitational on March 7.
The event marked an important start to the outdoor track and field season for UMES, as several team members achieved top finishes. The competition took place at the SU Track & Field Complex under mild weather conditions with temperatures in the high 60s and passing clouds.
On the women’s side, Jamayla Stansbury won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.59 seconds. Shennell Simms secured first place in the 400 meters, finishing in 59.18 seconds. Rihanna Gayle claimed victory in the 800 meters with a time of 2:27.06, while Lyee Simms finished first in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.93 seconds.
Other notable performances included Tayla Wilson placing third in the women’s 100 meters and Lynzi Evans taking second in the women’s 100-meter hurdles. In field events, Ndeye Diop placed third in shot put, and Amia Ducker earned third-place finishes in both discus and hammer throw.
For UMES men, one athlete took first place in pole vault by clearing a height of 4.25 meters. Additional strong showings included second through fifth places across various sprinting and distance events.
Looking ahead, UMES will travel to Jacksonville, Florida for their next competition at the Hampton Inn River City Relays on March 20.
