Congressman Brett Guthrie and Congressman Richard Hudson have announced a hearing titled “Global Networks at Risk: Securing the Future of Telecommunications Infrastructure.” The event is set to take place on April 30, 2025, at 10:00 AM ET in the Rayburn House Office Building. This hearing will focus on addressing vulnerabilities in communications infrastructure that adversaries might exploit to threaten national security and disrupt services.
Chairmen Guthrie and Hudson emphasized the urgency of strengthening networks to ensure resilience against evolving threats. They said, “Our adversaries continually seek to exploit vulnerabilities in our communications infrastructure to jeopardize our national security, disrupt critical services, and steal Americans’ data.”
The hearing will include testimony from experts across the industry, including Tom Stroup from the Satellite Industry Association (SIA). Stroup highlighted the importance of satellites in modern life, noting their role in global communications, navigation, remote sensing, and emergency response. He mentioned that with over 12,000 active satellites and more planned, innovation is rapidly advancing.
Stroup pointed out that satellite services support all critical infrastructure sectors and are essential for technologies like 5G and AI. He also warned about China’s growing investments in space technologies which could challenge U.S. national security.
SIA has outlined five priorities for supporting American space innovation: promoting streamlined regulations, leading international standards development, enacting effective space debris policies, improving government acquisition efficiency through streamlined procurement processes, and ensuring access to sufficient spectrum resources.
