Loyola women’s rowing team earns two bronze medals at Dad Vail Regatta

Loyola University Maryland’s men’s and women’s rowing teams competed on May 9 at the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta held on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, New Jersey. The event saw Loyola’s women’s varsity pair and freshmen/novice four crews each secure bronze medals in their respective grand finals.

The women’s varsity pair finished third in The Morrow Bowl grand final with a time of 8:39.200, trailing Long Island and Simmons but finishing nearly five seconds ahead of Oklahoma City. The freshmen/novice four also captured third place in its grand final, clocking a time of 8:13.510.

On the men’s side, the varsity eight crew took fifth place in its petite final with a time of 5:59.520, narrowly edging out Jacksonville by eleven hundredths of a second. The men’s varsity pair placed fourth in its final with a time of 7:56.230.

The best finish for Loyola’s men’s teams came from the second varsity four, which earned second place behind MIT in final No. 2 with a time of 7:19.230. Meanwhile, the women’s varsity four finished sixth in its own final No. 2 at 8:18.210.

Athletes representing Loyola across these events included Josephine Lightner and Mikayla Smith (women’s pair), Mary Cate Burger, Isabella Taranto, Beata Turnquist, Molly Gum and coxswain Bella Schafer (women’s varsity four), Bella Guarnaccia, Emily Luttman, Marley Vallino, Victoria Kolawa and coxswain Evan Ellsworth (freshmen/novice four), Troy Guillen and Connor Williams (men’s pair), Liam Van Es, Jeremiah James, Jacob Cordes, Sean Mullaly and coxswain Ari Ellis (second varsity four), as well as Pete Bohacek, Pat Tonna, Brendan Shaw, Gabe Wagner, Chris Engelbert, Joe Fontanilla, Ethan Shelley and Nico Del Pozzo with coxswain Josie Sedgley (varsity eight).

The results highlight competitive performances from both Loyola squads at one of collegiate rowing’s major regattas this season.
