The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team lost both games of its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader against Coppin State on April 3, falling 12–3 in the first game and 15–9 in extra innings in the second.
The outcome affects both teams’ records in conference play, with Maryland Eastern Shore now at 1–10 in the MEAC and Coppin State improving to 3–8. The results also mark another chapter in the ongoing series between these two programs.
In Game One, Maryland Eastern Shore matched Coppin State’s two-run first inning with a home run but struggled offensively over the next three innings. The Hawks added their final run in the fifth after a leadoff double and a wild pitch but could not keep pace as Coppin State pulled away for a nine-run victory.
Game Two saw an early lead for Maryland Eastern Shore, who went up by two runs before Coppin State answered back. A three-run home run tied the game at five apiece during the third inning. Both teams traded leads through regulation before extra innings were required. In the eighth, Coppin State took advantage of tiebreaker rules to score seven runs, while Maryland Eastern Shore managed one more run but ultimately fell short.
Friday’s contest was notable as it marked the third extra-inning game between these programs. Individual performances included two home runs by a Hawks player—her season total rising to three—and five runs batted in on the day. Another player recorded her fourth multi-hit game this season, while others contributed with walks and doubles.
Maryland Eastern Shore will conclude its three-game series against Coppin State on Saturday, April 4, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
