The Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks lost to the Mercyhurst Lakers, 6-5, on April 18 at Hawk Stadium.
The close contest saw the Hawks take an early lead but ultimately fall behind as the Lakers rallied late in the game. The result gives Mercyhurst a 2-0 lead in the series.
After a scoreless first inning, the Hawks scored first with an RBI double in the second. In the third inning, Maryland Eastern Shore extended their advantage with back-to-back RBI doubles and added another run when Gonzalez Perez advanced home on a stolen base, bringing their lead to 4-0. Despite Mercyhurst scoring once in the fifth inning, another RBI double by UMES restored their four-run cushion.
However, from the sixth through ninth innings, Mercyhurst outscored Maryland Eastern Shore by five runs and secured victory with three runs in the ninth frame. The Hawks finished with five runs on eight hits and two errors while Mercyhurst recorded six runs on seven hits without committing any errors. Four of UMES’ five runs came from RBI doubles. Caldwell and Brown each had two hits for UMES, while De Jesus pitched five innings and struck out three batters while allowing only one earned run.
