The Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks lost to the Delaware State Hornets, 5-4, in a baseball game on April 10 at Bob Reed Field in Dover, Delaware.
This game was the first of a three-game series between the two teams. The result leaves the Hawks with a record of five wins and twenty-four losses overall, and four wins and twelve losses in conference play. The Hornets now have three wins and twenty-seven losses overall, with three wins and thirteen losses in conference games.
The Hawks started strong when their leadoff batter hit a home run in the top of the first inning. After Delaware State tied it up in their half of the first inning, another Hawk drove in a run with an RBI single during the second frame. A home run to right field gave Maryland Eastern Shore a 3-1 lead by the third inning.
Delaware State responded by scoring four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take control of the game. Although relief pitcher Clausell threw five scoreless innings out of the bullpen and added an RBI single for Maryland Eastern Shore in the seventh inning, they could not bring home another tying run before time ran out.
Both teams finished with ten hits each. Carson and Jimenez each hit their second home runs of this season for Maryland Eastern Shore. Jimenez went two-for-five at bat, while Caldwell and Aponte both went two-for-four. Clausell recorded his career-high performance on defense by pitching five scoreless innings.
