The Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks lost to the Georgetown Hoyas, 13-9, on Apr. 7 at Capital One Park in Tysons, Virginia.
The game saw the Hawks take an early lead before the Hoyas responded with a series of runs that put them ahead for good. This matchup matters as it reflects both teams’ performances during their respective seasons and highlights the resilience of the Hawks despite recent losses.
In the first inning, Maryland Eastern Shore scored on an RBI ground out and added another run with a sacrifice fly to lead 2-0. However, Georgetown answered by scoring ten consecutive runs between the second and fourth innings, building a commanding 10-2 advantage. The Hawks narrowed the gap in the sixth inning when Azcona drove in a run with an RBI single. Jimenez and Azcona later scored on an error, followed by Gonzalez Perez hitting an RBI single up the middle to complete a four-run frame.
Caldwell crossed home plate on another Georgetown error in the seventh inning as Maryland Eastern Shore tried to rally back. Although Georgetown added one more run in their half of that inning, subsequent RBIs from Maryland Eastern Shore made it an 11-9 game heading into late innings. The Hoyas secured their win by adding two more runs in the eighth and holding off any further scoring attempts from UMES.
Statistically, Maryland Eastern Shore finished with nine runs on eleven hits and two errors while Georgetown tallied thirteen runs on ten hits and three errors. This marked back-to-back games for UMES ending with identical final scores of 13-9. One pitcher recorded a career-high two scoreless innings out of the bullpen with one strikeout; De Jesus also contributed a scoreless inning from the mound. Multiple players had multi-hit games: one went two-for-three at bat, Caldwell was two-for-two, and Gonzalez Perez was two-for-five; both Azcona and Gonzalez Perez collected two RBIs each.
Looking ahead, Maryland Eastern Shore continues its seven-game road trip with a three-game series against Delaware State beginning Friday at Dover.
