The Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks lost to the Long Island University Sharks, 13-2, on March 27 at Hawk Stadium.
The result marks another setback for the Hawks, who are now 4-18 overall and 3-7 in conference play. The loss comes as part of a series that will continue through the weekend.
In the opening inning, LIU took an early lead with back-to-back RBI singles. Although the Hawks’ starting pitcher settled down and threw two scoreless innings after that, defensive errors in the fourth allowed LIU to extend their advantage by three unearned runs. By the fifth inning, Torres and other relievers managed to keep LIU from scoring further until Jimenez hit a two-RBI triple in the seventh inning for Maryland Eastern Shore’s only runs of the game.
Despite narrowing LIU’s lead to 5-2 at one point, an eight-run eighth inning by LIU put the game out of reach for Maryland Eastern Shore. The final numbers showed that while Torres matched his season-high with five innings pitched and only gave up one earned run with two strikeouts, fielding mistakes proved costly for his team.
Jimenez led offensively for Maryland Eastern Shore by going 2-for-4 with a triple and driving in both of his team’s runs. He now leads the Northeast Conference with three triples this season. Another player recorded his third multi-hit game of the year by finishing 2-for-3 at bat.
The teams are scheduled to meet again on Saturday at Hawk Stadium. The next game will be streamed live on YouTube and live statistics will be available through umeshawksports.com.
