The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team lost to Coppin State, 10-0, in five innings in the final game of its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference series on April 4.
The loss ended a challenging series for the Hawks, who were held to just two hits and left five runners on base. The defeat marked the first time since 2018 that Maryland Eastern Shore has been swept by Coppin State in a three-game series.
Coppin State took control early with a five-run first inning, including a three-run home run and a two-RBI double. The Eagles extended their lead with runs in the second and third innings. Maryland Eastern Shore had opportunities to score but could not capitalize, leaving bases loaded in the third inning after back-to-back popups and a flyout.
Coppin State added three more runs in the fourth inning with another home run and an RBI single, pushing their advantage to 10-0. The Hawks managed one more baserunner via walk but were retired without scoring as the game ended after five innings due to conference rules.
Saturday’s result was significant for several reasons: it was only the seventh time in program history that Maryland Eastern Shore has lost a game in five innings and marked the 13th shutout against them by Coppin State since their all-time series began.
Maryland Eastern Shore will have a week off before traveling to Orangeburg, South Carolina on April 11–12 for another conference matchup against South Carolina State.
