The Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks split a doubleheader against the Norfolk State Spartans at Hawk Stadium on May 1, taking the first game 9-3 before falling in the second game 15-8.
The result leaves both teams tied in their weekend series, providing each side with momentum heading into the series finale. The games showcased strong offensive performances and key pitching efforts from both squads.
In the opening game, Maryland Eastern Shore responded to an early run by Norfolk State with a four-run first inning. Sacrifice flies and a two-run single from Shipley gave the Hawks a lead they would not relinquish. Torres pitched six innings and struck out four batters to earn his second win of the season. Clausell secured his first collegiate save by delivering three scoreless innings in relief and also contributed two hits offensively. Shipley finished perfect at the plate, going 1-for-1 with three runs batted in.
Norfolk State turned things around in game two, capitalizing on errors by UMES to post seven runs in one inning and build a commanding lead. The Hawks attempted a comeback behind RBI hits from several players including Rodriguez, Carson, Caldwell, and Aponte but ultimately could not close the gap as Norfolk State added late insurance runs for a 15-8 victory. Jimenez led UMES with two hits and three walks while Aponte and Carson each drove in two runs.
Across both games, UMES’ pitching staff recorded ten strikeouts in game two while managing to keep errors low during their opening win but struggled defensively later on.
Maryland Eastern Shore will conclude its six-game homestand with a series finale against Norfolk State scheduled for Sunday, May 3 at Hawk Stadium. The contest will be available via livestream on YouTube as well as live stats through UMESHawkSports.com.
