The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team lost to Morgan State, 4–1, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game on March 28 after the Bears scored four runs during the middle innings.
This result leaves Maryland Eastern Shore with a record of 9–21 overall and 1–6 in conference play, while Morgan State improves to 6-17 overall and 3-4 in the MEAC. The game highlights ongoing challenges for the Hawks as they look to improve their standing within the conference.
Maryland Eastern Shore took an early lead in the first inning after reaching base on an error and scoring on an RBI single. The Hawks held onto their advantage until the fourth inning when Morgan State responded with two runs, aided by a single and a UMES error. In the fifth inning, Morgan State extended its lead with a two-RBI single.
UMES attempted to rally late in the game but was unable to overcome Morgan State’s pitching and defense. A walk and a single put runners on base, but attempts at aggressive baserunning were thwarted by outs at home plate and runner interference that ended the contest.
A UMES player recorded her season’s twenty-fifth hit and thirteenth RBI during this game, leading her team in both categories. The starting pitcher threw four innings with two hits allowed, one walk, and two strikeouts before being relieved for two more innings by another pitcher who gave up five hits and two earned runs.
The Hawks will continue their series against Morgan State with a doubleheader scheduled for Sunday, March 29.
