The University of Maryland Eastern Shore women’s basketball team improved its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) record to 4–0 with a 68–61 overtime win over Coppin State on Thursday evening. This marks the Hawks’ best start in conference play in more than 25 years.
Maryland Eastern Shore, now 11–10 overall, secured the victory after holding Coppin State scoreless during overtime and converting crucial free throws late in the game. The Hawks are off to their first 4–0 conference start since the 1990–91 season.
Lynch led all scorers with 28 points, adding 15 rebounds and two steals. This was her second game this January scoring at least 20 points and her third double-double of the season. Perry contributed 11 points, six rebounds, and two blocks for UMES.
UMES capitalized on Coppin State’s mistakes, turning 27 turnovers into a 17–9 advantage on fast break points. The Hawks also recorded 12 assists in the contest.
After trailing early, UMES finished the first quarter ahead and maintained control through much of the game until Coppin State tied it late in regulation. Taylor hit consecutive three-pointers to help force overtime at a score of 61–61. In overtime, Perry scored a layup while Perry and Lynch added four straight free throws to secure the win.
Next, Maryland Eastern Shore begins a four-game road stretch starting Thursday, Jan. 22 against North Carolina Central University at 6 p.m.
