Maryland State Senator Cory McCray will address the graduating class at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s 139th Spring Commencement on May 15, according to an April 27 announcement.
The event is set to take place at 10 a.m. in the university’s William P. Hytche Athletic Center. The selection of McCray as commencement speaker highlights his connection to higher education and public service.
“The UMES community is honored to have the Honorable Cory McCray as commencement speaker for our graduates entering the world,” said UMES President Heidi M. Anderson. “He is proof that hard work, perseverance, and education pay off. Sen. McCray is a great example as he continues to advocate for the future of our youth.”
McCray represents District 45 in the Maryland State Senate and has previously served as acting chair of the Maryland Democratic Party. He and his wife Demetria established a scholarship fund for aspiring educators at Coppin State University, demonstrating their commitment to supporting historically Black colleges and universities.
As someone who grew up in Baltimore, McCray credits his apprenticeship training with launching his career as an electrician before earning degrees from Baltimore City Community College and National College. He said these experiences continue to shape his dedication to workforce development, education, and economic mobility for people across Maryland.
Senator McCray authored “The Apprenticeship That Saved My Life,” which he describes as both a guidebook and call to action highlighting apprenticeships as pathways toward success for underserved youth.
McCray also acknowledged his family’s influence on his ongoing efforts: he credits his wife and children with inspiring him “to build better opportunities for the next generation.” He was first elected to public office in 2014.
