Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich announced on Apr. 13 that the county is seeking applicants to fill several vacancies on the Montgomery County Sports Advisory Committee.
The committee, which is supported by Montgomery County Recreation, studies sports participation and opportunities within the county. It also recognizes outstanding teams and athletes and provides recommendations to both the County Executive and the Montgomery County Council. The group aims to advocate for improved sports opportunities, conduct research, and address disparities in youth sports in order to enhance residents’ quality of life.
“Sports matter because they give kids structure along with opportunity to learn new skills, create healthy habits and make new friends,” said Marc Elrich. “But not every family in Montgomery County has the same access to fields, programs or equipment, and that’s something we need to keep working on. This Committee plays an important role in helping us understand where the gaps are and how we can improve. I encourage any resident who cares about youth sports, community access or making our system more fair and more responsive to please consider getting involved and serving on the Sports Advisory Committee.”
The committee submits an annual report detailing factors affecting local sports participation such as availability of athletic fields, facilities, and access to different sports. It makes recommendations aimed at improving both quality and variety of local sporting opportunities. In addition, it recognizes individuals or groups—such as coaches or volunteers—who promote equitable participation through activities like team management or equipment donations.
Committee members serve three-year terms without compensation but may be reimbursed for travel or dependent care related to attending meetings held monthly. The county encourages applicants from diverse backgrounds across professions, geography, abilities, ethnicities, genders, and ages. Members must complete training covering Maryland’s Open Meetings Act as well as ethics law requirements.
Applications are due by Wednesday, April 22.
