Rep. Glenn Ivey, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 4th district, marked the 60th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid with a series of public statements and community events, emphasizing his commitment to protecting access to affordable healthcare.
On July 29, Ivey announced an upcoming community event via social media, stating: “EVENT REMINDER: Tomorrow, join me, @SenatorATW, and Delegates Ashanti Martinez and Nicole Williams in Greenbelt for a focused community conversation. When: Wednesday, July 30 · 10 AM–12 PM Bring your stories, questions, and ideas. This isn’t a briefing—it’s your discussion.”
The following day, on July 30—the date marking the creation of Medicare and Medicaid—Ivey wrote: “As we celebrate this 60-year milestone of Medicare and Medicaid, let’s renew our promise: Medicare and Medicaid are not relics of the past—they are essential lifelines we rely on today. I remain dedicated to protecting and strengthening access to affordable healthcare for every”.
Later that day after hosting a town hall focused on Medicare policy issues, he posted: “Today’s Medicare Town Hall was more than a policy discussion—it was a wake-up call. We heard from Sheila Lemus, a constituent living with MS, who survived thanks to Medicaid. But under H.R. 1, folks like Sheila—along with working families, seniors, disabled Americans, and kids”.
Glenn Ivey has served in Congress since replacing Anthony Brown in 2023. Before his current role as representative for Maryland’s 4th District—a position he has held since January 2023—Ivey previously served in the Maryland House of Representatives. He was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts in 1961 and now resides in Cheverly at age 62. Ivey holds degrees from Princeton University (BA) and Harvard Law School (JD).
Medicare and Medicaid were both established on July 30th sixty years ago as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Great Society programs designed to expand healthcare coverage for seniors and low-income Americans.
