Rep. Glenn Ivey, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Maryland’s 4th district since 2023, has voiced support for District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb’s legal efforts against what he describes as an “unprecedented, unlawful takeover” of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) by President Trump.
On August 15, 2025, Ivey posted on X: “I support AG Schwalb’s effort to stop Trump’s unprecedented, unlawful takeover of the MPD. There is no crime emergency, and the D.C. Home Rule Act doesn’t allow this overreach. This is yet another attempt by President Trump to create a distraction.”
Following developments in the case, Ivey commented again on August 16: “I commend District of Columbia AG Schwalb for successfully bringing a lawsuit to fight back against Trump’s overreach in seizing control of the Metropolitan Police Department. Thanks to these efforts, DC will maintain control of its police force in accordance with the law and”
In a separate post on August 18, Ivey noted his participation at a local cultural event: “I was pleased to join the @BAPS_PubAffairs in Beltsville as they celebrated the Janmashtami festival, an occasion marked by devotion, cultural performances, and uplifting community spirit. Congratulations on your 25th anniversary. Wishing the Beltsville BAPS community abundant”
The posts come amid ongoing debate regarding federal intervention in local policing within Washington D.C., particularly under the D.C. Home Rule Act which grants certain self-governing powers to district authorities.
Glenn Ivey succeeded Anthony Brown in Congress after winning election in 2022 and began serving in January 2023. Prior to his tenure in Congress, he served in the Maryland House of Representatives. Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts in 1961 and now residing in Cheverly, Ivey holds degrees from Princeton University (BA) and Harvard Law School (JD).
