Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district, has addressed the ongoing government shutdown and its effects on his constituents in a series of social media posts this week.

On October 1, 2025, Hoyer praised state leadership for their efforts to assist those impacted by the federal closure: “I commend @GovWesMoore and our state leaders for working diligently to support Marylanders who will be impacted by the government shutdown.

I urge all in #MD05 and beyond, especially federal employees, to utilize and share these resources provided below:

The following day, Hoyer attributed responsibility for the shutdown to Republican leadership at the federal level: “The facts speak for themselves: the American people know who is to blame for shutting down the government.

Republicans are in charge of the House, the Senate, and the White House.

Later that same day, he described how the situation has affected Americans across the country: “Republicans’ government shutdown has brought about uncertainty, frustration, & fear for many Americans & their families.

Steny Hoyer has represented Maryland’s 5th District since replacing Gladys Spellman in Congress in 1981. He previously served in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature before beginning his long tenure at the national level. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville, Hoyer holds degrees from University of Maryland and Georgetown University Law Center.
