Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, recently shared a series of posts addressing higher education in Maryland, funding for federal agencies within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and religious freedom.
On March 10, 2026, Hoyer highlighted his engagement with local educational leaders by stating, “Always great to meet with @UMBC President Valerie Sheares Ashby and discuss the steps the university is taking to strengthen higher education in Maryland. I applaud her staunch leadership and the university’s unwavering commitment to supporting their students and our communities https://t.co/9VqLo4ajy8”.
Later that day, he commented on ongoing debates over DHS funding: “Republicans are acting as if Democrats are the reason federal workers at the law-abiding agencies within DHS have been working without pay. We may disagree on funding ICE & CBP, but Democrats support funding other DHS agencies such as the Coast Guard, Secret Service, CISA, TSA,”.
On March 11, Hoyer addressed comments made by Congressman Ogles regarding religious freedom: “The First Amendment guarantees religious freedom to every American. Congressman Ogles’ shameful comments go against the very core values of America, our Declaration of Independence, and our Constitution. Sadly, almost all immigrants who have come to America have faced similar”.
Hoyer has represented Maryland’s 5th District since replacing Gladys Spellman in 1981. Prior to his tenure in Congress, he served in both the Maryland House of Representatives and State Senate from 1967 to 1975. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville at age 83, Hoyer holds a BA from the University of Maryland, College Park and a JD from Georgetown University Law Center.
