Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, posted a series of statements on his social media accounts addressing the anniversary of the October 7th attack on Israel, the ongoing government shutdown, and its impact on federal employees and health care.

On October 7, 2025, Hoyer marked the second anniversary of the attack on Israel, sharing his official remarks: “My full statement to mark two years since the October 7th attack on Israel: https://t.co/0ut1rjAk9u https://t.co/QnsjAqANiT”.

Later that day, Hoyer commented on the government shutdown and its effects on federal workers. He wrote: “It is not conventional wisdom. It is the law. Those who want the government to stay open and operating do not threaten its employees. Federal workers aren’t political pawns; they’re patriots. I stand with our federal employees and call on Republicans to come to the table and https://t.co/sJY3FvPTJ3”.

On October 8, 2025, Hoyer addressed the health care crisis linked to the ongoing shutdown, stating: “House Republicans are nowhere to be found as the health care crisis that they orchestrated worsens every day the government remains closed. Tune in as Democrats fight to prevent health care premiums from doubling and demand an end to the Republican shutdown. https://t.co/p7wLBd0GLR”.

Hoyer has been a member of Congress since 1981, succeeding Gladys Spellman, and has a long history in public service, including terms in both the Maryland House of Representatives and State Senate. Born in New York City in 1939, he currently resides in Mechanicsville. Hoyer holds degrees from the University of Maryland, College Park, and Georgetown University Law Center.
