Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, posted a series of statements on social media addressing the anniversary of the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas, the ongoing peace negotiations between Israel and Hamas, and concerns over health care coverage in the United States.

On October 8, 2025, Hoyer wrote, “I joined @RepJoshG in marking two years since Hamas’ devastating Oct. 7 attack on Israel. I am optimistic that we are close to finalizing the plan to secure the return of the 48 remaining hostages & ensure that Oct. 7 never happens again. I continue to pray for those we’ve lost”.

The following day, October 9, he shared his official response regarding ongoing diplomatic efforts: “My full statement on the negotiated peace agreement between Israel and Hamas:”.

Later that same day, Hoyer turned his attention to domestic issues with a warning about impending health care challenges: “Health care premiums are at hand, and the loss of coverage for millions of Americans is fast approaching. The time to act is now. Republicans have left Democrats – and the American people – waiting.”

Hoyer has represented Maryland’s 5th District in Congress for over four decades after succeeding Gladys Spellman in 1981. Prior to his tenure in Congress, he served in both the Maryland House of Representatives and State Senate from 1967 to 1975. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville, Hoyer holds degrees from the University of Maryland, College Park (BA) and Georgetown University Law Center (JD).
