Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, addressed several key issues in a series of posts on March 26, 2026.
In a tweet posted at 18:39 UTC, Hoyer reflected on the aftermath of the Key Bridge collapse and the collective response from Maryland: “The Key Bridge collapse was bigger than Baltimore. In the wake of this tragedy, our state came together to recover those we lost, clear the channel, & reopen the Port. Team Maryland will keep working to ensure the federal government provides the full resources to build a safer,” he wrote.
Later that evening at 21:07 UTC, Hoyer marked Equal Pay Day by highlighting ongoing concerns about wage disparities: “On #EqualPayDay, we’re reminded how the gender pay gap affects not only women, but families across the country. I was proud to bring the Paycheck Fairness Act to the Floor as Majority Leader, and Democrats will continue fighting to close the wage gap & ensure women receive equal”.
At 22:22 UTC on March 26, Hoyer commented on federal real estate management and workplace safety for government employees: “Federal workers need the right type of space to do their jobs as effectively & safely as possible, and the Reagan Building fails to meet the FBI’s security & operational needs. Swift correction of this mismanagement of federal real estate is necessary so the FBI can continue to”.
Hoyer has served in Congress for over four decades after replacing Gladys Spellman in 1981. Before his tenure in Congress, he served in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature from 1967 through 1975. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville, Hoyer holds degrees from University of Maryland and Georgetown University Law Center.
