Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, addressed several issues on his social media account in March 2026, including a violent incident in Michigan, economic challenges facing Marylanders, and the ongoing government shutdown affecting TSA workers.
On March 12, Hoyer condemned an attack in Michigan: “The violent, antisemitic attack at the Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan is despicable. I continue to pray for the schoolchildren, congregants, synagogue staff, and the local Jewish community at this time. I thank the law enforcement for their emergency response” (March 12, 2026).
The following day, he commented on rising energy costs: “As Marylanders are facing financial strain at the hands of the Trump Admin, it is critical that we continue to combat rising energy prices for working families. The Maryland Congressional Delegation will keep working with our state and regional partners to lower all Marylanders'” (March 13, 2026).
Later that same day, Hoyer discussed the impact of a government shutdown on federal employees: “TSA workers are set to miss their first full paycheck today, and Republicans in Congress continue to block legislation that would fund TSA along with other law-abiding agencies within DHS. If my colleagues are serious about ending this shutdown, they need to support Ranking” (March 13, 2026).
Hoyer has served as a member of Congress since replacing Gladys Spellman in 1981 and previously held positions in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature. He was born in New York City in 1939 and resides in Mechanicsville. Hoyer holds degrees from the University of Maryland and Georgetown University Law Center.
