Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, used his Twitter account on May 5, 2026, to address several issues including public service recognition, Department of Homeland Security funding, and Jewish American Heritage Month.

In a post at 15:06 UTC on May 5, Hoyer stated: “During Public Service Recognition Week, we highlight & thank our public employees for their dedication to making a difference in the lives of Americans every day. That is why I am proud to lead 60 colleagues in a bipartisan resolution to honor this commemoration. I remain”.

Later that day at 17:28 UTC, he commented on legislative efforts related to the Department of Homeland Security: “On February 11th, Ranking Member @rosadelauro and I introduced a bill that would fund the law-abiding agencies within the Department of Homeland Security, excluding ICE and CBP. The House passed legislation that does exactly that – 78 days later. DHS could have been open months”.

At 20:23 UTC on May 5, Hoyer marked Jewish American Heritage Month by writing: “We observe Jewish American Heritage Month this year at a moment of danger & anxiety for the American Jewish community, which faces unprecedented levels of antisemitism. As we fight rising antisemitism & ensure American Jews’ safety, let’s continue to celebrate their history &”.

Hoyer has represented Maryland’s 5th District in Congress since replacing Gladys Spellman in 1981 and previously served in both the Maryland House of Representatives and State Senate from 1967 to 1975. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville at age 83, Hoyer holds degrees from the University of Maryland and Georgetown University Law Center.
