Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, shared a series of posts on his social media account in late September 2025, touching on religious observance, agricultural research, and current political debates.

On September 22, Hoyer marked the Jewish New Year with a message to constituents and the broader community: “As Jews across America, in Israel, & around the world gather with their families to observe Rosh Hashanah, I pray that this new year is one of joy & new beginnings. Let us all strive to find moments of sweetness in this season of renewal. Shana Tova.”

The following day, he addressed efforts to support local scientific institutions. On September 23 he wrote: “I joined members of the Maryland Delegation to visit the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, which has led innovation in agricultural research for decades. We will continue fighting the Trump Admin’s efforts to shutter the facility and working to protect BARC, its experts,” referencing ongoing disputes over federal funding for agricultural research facilities.

Later that same day, Hoyer commented on partisan disagreements within Congress regarding funding bills. He stated: “The only American that Republicans’ partisan funding bill serves is Donald Trump. @HouseDemocrats are united in the fight to protect health care and the wellbeing of the American people.”

Hoyer’s career spans several decades; before entering Congress he served in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville at age 83, Hoyer holds degrees from University of Maryland and Georgetown University Law Center.
