Steny Hoyer, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, has recently shared several statements on social media addressing tax policy, support for firefighters, and federal program funding.

On April 16, 2026, Hoyer commented on the annual tax deadline: “Each April 15, Americans dutifully pay their taxes to ensure we can invest in opportunities that grow economic prosperity. But due to President Trump’s misguided policies, American families are paying more for less. Hardworking families expect that the taxes they pay will”.

Later that day, he participated in an event honoring firefighters: “I was honored to join the @NFFF_News Flag Ceremony to remember our fallen heroes and give thanks for their sacrifice for our nation. As Co-Chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, I will continue my work to keep our firefighters safe in the line of duty and support their”.

On April 17, 2026, Hoyer addressed federal budget cuts by Republicans: “Instead of investing in our civic institutions, Republicans are slashing federal programs and services that protect and make life more affordable for hardworking American families. Tune in now as @AppropsDems fight back:  https://t.co/ob4UrgtFqk”.

Hoyer has a long history of public service. He began his political career in the Maryland State Senate from 1967 to 1975 before joining Congress in 1981 after replacing Gladys Spellman. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville at age 83, Hoyer holds degrees from the University of Maryland, College Park (BA) and Georgetown University Law Center (JD).
