Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, recently addressed several national issues in a series of posts on his social media account.
On January 12, 2026, Hoyer commented on former President Donald Trump’s remarks regarding Federal Reserve Board Chair Jerome Powell. He stated, “Trump’s latest threats to prosecute Federal Reserve Board Chair Powell on sham charges are a direct attack on the Fed’s independence and its ability to fight inflation and support job growth. Trump can try to scapegoat the Fed for our economy’s woes, but the only person he has”.
Two days later, on January 14, Hoyer discussed the need for improved security measures for federal law enforcement facilities. He wrote, “The FBI needs a safe & secure facility to perform its vital law enforcement & national security mission. GSA & FBI must have a comprehensive plan that meets the highest security tier for federal buildings and share it with Congress for review before even considering a move to a”.
Later that same day, Hoyer addressed foreign policy concerns related to Greenland and NATO. He posted, “The inflammatory rhetoric from the Trump Administration concerning Greenland threatens to undermine the U.S. & NATO’s shared ability to counter real threats. The bipartisan No Funds for NATO Invasion Act makes clear to our partners & the world: it is unacceptable to invade the”.
Hoyer has been an active member of Congress since replacing Gladys Spellman in 1981 and previously served in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature from 1967 through 1975. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville, Hoyer holds degrees from University of Maryland, College Park (BA) and Georgetown University Law Center (JD).
