Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, posted a series of statements on September 10, 2025, addressing federal budget proposals and condemning political violence.

In his first post at 14:06 UTC, Hoyer criticized the Trump administration’s approach to science funding: “The Trump Admin’s budget proposal would reinforce funding cuts for agencies & critical science initiatives that boost our national security & economy.

Later the same day at 21:17 UTC, he reflected on the nature of political violence by referencing civil rights leader John Lewis: “My friend and brother John Lewis would tell us that the term ‘political violence’ is an oxymoron. Politics is about resolving disagreements peacefully.

Once you have committed violence, you have transcended politics and basic human decency entirely. If we fail to learn that”.

In another post at the same time, Hoyer called for Americans to reject violence in political discourse: “Every American should condemn and reject acts of violence against those with whom we disagree. That is the exact opposite of what democracy is, and those who resort to violence only threaten our republic and our people’s safety.

I am praying for Charlie Kirk, his family, and”.

Steny Hoyer has represented Maryland’s 5th District in Congress since replacing Gladys Spellman in 1981. Before serving in Congress, he was active in Maryland state politics as a member of both the House of Representatives and State Senate from 1967 to 1975. Born in New York City in 1939, Hoyer resides in Mechanicsville and holds degrees from the University of Maryland and Georgetown University Law Center.
