Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, has used his social media platform to voice concerns over recent federal actions affecting public broadcasting, voting rights, and veterans’ benefits.

On August 5, 2025, Hoyer criticized the Trump administration for reducing funding to a major public media institution. He stated: “It is shameful that the Trump Admin has slashed funding for the Corporation of Public Broadcasting, which funds 1,500 local radio & television stations that keep our communities safe & informed. It is clear that Trump’s attack on the free press is part of his mission to serve”.

Addressing concerns about electoral access two days later on August 7, Hoyer posted: “60 years ago, we made a commitment to representation. However, voter suppression is on the rise, as the Voting Rights Act is attacked and undermined. It is imperative that we pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to ensure every American can participate and is”.

Later on August 7, Hoyer commented on support for military veterans: “We must never waiver in our commitment to Veterans. Yet Trump’s attack on VA employees and his cuts to health care have made it more difficult for Veterans to get the benefits they’ve earned. House Democrats will keep working to fulfill our sacred duty to care for them.”

Steny Hoyer was born in New York City in 1939 and currently resides in Mechanicsville at age 83. Before serving in Congress, he held positions in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature and holds degrees from the University of Maryland and Georgetown University Law Center.
