Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district and Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee’s Financial Services and General Government (FSGG) subcommittee, has voiced concerns over Republican-led funding decisions in a series of posts on September 3, 2025.

In a tweet posted at 12:01 UTC, Hoyer stated, “Unless Congress asserts its authority, Republicans will keep diverting funds from programs and services that support medical research and public education. @AppropsDems will continue fighting against efforts to jeopardize the American people’s success.”

Later that day at 14:41 UTC, he reiterated his position by posting, “As Ranking Member of the @AppropsDems FSGG subcommittee, I am focused on holding Republicans accountable for the proposed cuts to agencies under our jurisdiction. I will continue to stand for the appropriations process and work to ensure FSGG agencies have the funding they need”.

In another post at the same time, Hoyer commented on actions taken by former President Trump and former Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought: “Since January, we’ve seen Trump & Vought politicize, weaponize, & illegally withhold funding from federal agencies to the detriment of the American people. Tune in now as @AppropsDems fight against these efforts to hinder the efficiency of our government:”

Hoyer has served in Congress since 1981 after replacing Gladys Spellman. He previously held positions in both the Maryland House of Representatives and State Senate between 1967 and 1975. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville, Hoyer holds degrees from University of Maryland, College Park (BA) and Georgetown University Law Center (JD).
