Steny Hoyer, U.S. Congressman representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, used his social media platform on September 30, 2025, to address concerns about the federal workforce and an impending government shutdown.

In a post from the afternoon of September 30, Hoyer stated: “The Trump Admin’s policies have devastated the federal workforce, & Vought seeks to use the possible shutdown to further traumatize & villainize their service. I joined @RepSarahElfreth & @Sen_Alsobrooks to ensure federal workers have the support they need during a shutdown.” He attributed current challenges facing federal employees to previous administration policies and highlighted efforts with fellow lawmakers Rep. Sarah Elfreth and Sen. Alsobrooks.

Later that day, as a potential government funding lapse approached, Hoyer criticized Republican spending proposals: “Government funding runs out tonight, but Republicans continue to push a partisan spending bill that will worsen the health care crisis & raise costs for millions of Americans. Democrats are ready to create a bipartisan solution that keeps the government open & running”.

Addressing broader impacts of a possible shutdown in another statement posted just over an hour later, he wrote: “Shutting down the government is not only wasteful, but it would devastate thousands of federal employees and millions more Americans who rely on their service. Watch @HouseDemocrats continue the fight against the Republican shutdown:”

Hoyer has served in Congress since replacing Gladys Spellman in 1981 and previously held positions in both chambers of Maryland’s state legislature. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville, he holds degrees from University of Maryland and Georgetown University Law Center.
