Steny Hoyer, a longtime member of the U.S. Congress representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, has recently used his social media platform to voice criticism of the Trump administration and its policies.

On September 3, 2025, Hoyer wrote, “If the American people’s representatives are irrelevant, our democracy is dead. Trump & Vought are treating the bills that our Congress has passed as suggestions & telling Americans, ‘You’re On Your Own.’ We must take action against the Admin’s harmful agenda.”

The following day, on September 4, 2025, he continued his critique by posting: “Republicans sit on their hands as Trump & Vought cut funding for agencies that protect against financial crimes, making it easier for the wealthy to evade the taxes they legally owe. Democrats will keep fighting to ensure the American people aren’t left vulnerable.”

On September 5, 2025, Hoyer commented on recent economic data: “The data doesn’t lie. With just 22,000 jobs added & unemployment rising to 4.3%, the August jobs report reflects an alarming slow down in the job market. Trump’s disastrous policies continue to put our economy & the American people in a perilous position.”

Hoyer’s remarks reflect ongoing debates in Congress regarding executive actions and fiscal policy under President Donald Trump and Russell Vought. He has served in Congress since replacing Gladys Spellman in 1981 and previously held positions in both the Maryland House of Representatives and State Senate from 1967 to 1975. Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville at age 83, Hoyer holds degrees from University of Maryland, College Park (BA) and Georgetown University Law Center (JD).
