Steny Hoyer, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing Maryland’s 5th district since 1981, has recently voiced his concerns on social media regarding actions and policies associated with the Trump Administration. Known for his extensive political career, which began in the Maryland State Senate, Hoyer continues to engage actively in national discourse.
On June 7, 2025, Hoyer criticized efforts by the Trump Administration stating that “These shameful efforts reflect the prejudice that the Trump Administration uses to shape its policies and fuel its continued assault on Americans’ civil rights.“
In another tweet from the same day, he condemned actions taken by Secretary Pete Hegseth regarding U.S. Navy vessels: “The actions taken by Secretary Hegseth to remove the names of Harriet Tubman, Harvey Milk, and other Civil Rights heroes from U.S. Navy vessels are beneath the dignity of our country and the values our Armed Services stand for.“
On June 9, 2025, Hoyer expressed disappointment over House Republicans’ refusal to display a memorial honoring police officers who defended the Capitol during events on January 6th: “House Republicans are refusing to display a memorial to the police who defended the Capitol on January 6th against Trump’s mob – as required by law.” He also extended gratitude towards Rep. Joe Morelle for acknowledging their bravery.
Born in New York City in 1939 and currently residing in Mechanicsville, Steny Hoyer graduated from both University of Maryland and Georgetown University Law Center.
